Md. Ejaz, recently appointed as the Administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation, has come under scrutiny for his alleged past ties with the banned militant outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir. Sources reveal that Ejaz was actively involved with the organization in the early 2000s and was listed among its top five leaders in a 2014 memo by the Special Branch of police.
Prior to his involvement with Hizb ut-Tahrir, Ejaz had political affiliations with Islami Chhatra Shibir during his student years. In 2014, he was arrested on charges of anti-state propaganda and financing militant activities. Although later released on bail, law enforcement agencies reported that he continued participating in activities deemed unlawful under the ban on the group.
Following a shift in the political landscape after August 5, 2024, Ejaz was acquitted of all charges on November 10. His appointment as city administrator reportedly came upon the recommendation of ruling party advisor Asif Mahmud and with the backing of a female political advisor.
The appointment has raised significant concern among security experts and civil society members, particularly due to the lack of security clearance from intelligence agencies. Analysts warn that the inclusion of individuals with extremist backgrounds in key administrative positions poses a potential threat not only to national security but also to democratic governance.
