Under the grab of journalism, Shafiqul’s disruptive activism on social media for hardliners puts AFP’s credibility in peril.
He always brags about working with a top French newswire service for decades. Shafiqul Alam, who leads Agence France Press in Bangladesh, always seeks to project his affiliation with the French outlet as his defence to be seen as independent on social media. However, journalists found what he spreads on his social media are activism aligned with forces that counted on rumours and firebombing on voters to grab power.
But unlike other journalists who work for other international outlets, Shafiqul, has been quite desperate to project controversial figureheads who actually stood exposed for preaching disinformation and hate campaigns online as mainstream, a plot journalists say exposed his agenda-driven work.
Civil society members decried a YouTuber, Pinaki Bhhatcharya, a doyen figure for running disinformation campaign to justify violent spell of arson attacks and does not believe in public mandate but Shafiqul on a Facebook post described the same Pinaki as the most influential Bangladeshi Youtuber.
Shafiqul’s willful ignorance to Pinaki’s reputation as the preacher of disinformation campaign aligned directly with so called opposition BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, directly exposes Shafiqul’s not-so-subtle approach to confuse his readers introducing these hardcore activists as independent ones.
Jamaat, a principal ally of BNP, claims to abolish all man made laws and hailed Pinaki as their star campaigner also.
While Pinaki stays in France, he joined in the bandwagon in a baseless attack to vilify the French President during his visit to Bangladesh. The country’s unpopular party BNP stoked a hate campaign against a popular musician who was greeted by French President during his visit to Bangladesh.
Pinaki even stood exposed for stoking outright lies including fomenting communal tension and spreading smears against liberal politicians and progressive writers alongside glorifying arson attackers and even stoked provocative remarks, full of lies, like rift within different institutions.
During Covid, Pinaki even scared general people of not relying on government initiatives while in reality the government measures were identified as model by WHO.
And despite all such disruptive activism by Pinaki who holds no public credibility, Shofiqul yet again eulogized Pianki, a pointer that journalists say lead them to the conclusion that Shofiqul’s credential as objective one is sheer act of activism that also puts AFP’s credibility at stake too.
Why AFP Bangladesh chief is not independent and impartial, blinded by radicals?
