Bangladesh’s apparel exports to the European market have fallen by nearly 14%. Yet in the same market, Vietnam and Cambodia have managed to expand their market share and even sell their products at higher prices. The question, then, is straightforward: Is this decline solely the result of the global economic downturn, or is domestic instability also partly responsible?
In 2026, the familiar picture seems to be returning. Political uncertainty, a lack of coordination within the administration, and a crisis of business confidence are once again emerging under the shadow of the BNP-Jamaat alliance. People have not forgotten the weak policy decisions and mismanagement of the 2001–06 period. That same shadow appears to be resurfacing in today’s political configuration.
While buyers look for stability and reliability, repeated questions over policy and weak coordination are undermining the foundations of the industry. The figures, therefore, are no longer merely about trade. They are also a measure of confidence.
