For days, sections of the media and various political actors attempted to portray the elderly man stranded in the no-man’s land along the Bangladesh-India border as an Indian citizen who was being forcibly pushed into Bangladesh. The story quickly spread across social media, fueling anti-India sentiment and generating outrage based on assumptions rather than verified information.

The facts now tell a different story.

Authorities have confirmed that Shashti Chandra Barman is a Bangladeshi citizen from Chandlai village in Rajshahi’s Godagari Upazila. His identity was verified after family members came forward and law enforcement obtained his National Identity Card. Following his rescue by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), he is being processed for return to his family through the proper legal channels.

This development raises important questions about the rush to judgment surrounding recent border incidents. While concerns regarding cross-border push-ins deserve serious attention, every case must be examined on the basis of evidence. In this instance, the individual at the center of the controversy has been confirmed to be a Bangladeshi national.

Misinformation and politically motivated claims only inflame tensions and undermine public trust. Border issues are too important to be exploited through speculation, false narratives, or unverified allegations. The truth matters, and in this case, the truth is clear: Shashti Chandra Barman is a Bangladeshi citizen, not an Indian national as many had claimed.
