Bangladesh has fallen to 179th out of 190 countries in the World Bank’s Women, Business and the Law 2026 report, continuing a downward trend from recent years. Despite earlier gains in female labour force participation, education and entrepreneurship, the country now ranks among the lowest in South Asia. The report highlights weaknesses in legal protections, institutional support and policy implementation, raising concerns that progress in women’s economic empowerment has stalled amid persistent barriers such as limited access to finance, workplace insecurity and inadequate enforcement of existing laws.
